Kids are afraid of ghosts in the dark, monsters under their beds, witches in the woods, etc. For one, Leah's little boy, Mark, hides whenever he sees a scary face flash on their flat screen. Some may even cry for their mothers. Others would have nightmares, like me when I was a child. I believe it is a natural reaction to ("unusual") ugliness, especially to children. They either get suddenly surprised or totally scared. But what a change when it is October! They are somewhat eager to see anything paranormal and be dressed as one as they look forward to the "party" on...

Last year, it was my first ("celebrated") Halloween. We did not exactly do trick-or-treating but we walked around to see how kids were doing. There was a house by the corner of Manatee and Mineola Drives where the entire family was involved. The two boys were like evolving werewolves, their dad looked like the father wolf with long white claws sticking out while mom was the witch with eyeglasses. Their front yard was the "halloweenest" place I have seen. Where could they have bought their big black cauldron? Hmm... I wonder what was brewing that time. And oh! I did not notice some black cats? The positive thing about trick-or-treating is that kids look at supernatural beings as something fun instead of fearful. It gives them a general idea that Halloween means CANDY time. How they enjoy wearing ugly masks and donning weird cloaks! The ugliest or the weirdest, the better. I begin to think that if kids would consider everyday as halloween, then they would not be scared...
